These entries are usually listed on a Website. The Website address is called a URL which stands for 'Uniform Resource
Locator' and looks something like www.domainhoard.com
The www. stands for World Wide Web. The name in the middle is then the actual domain name. Strictly speaking it represents a number called the IP address, but as most people have some difficulties remembering a long string of numbers, it was decided to allocate to every IP address a more readily remembered Name. In our case this is 'DomainHoard'. Then there is the lettering at the end. In our case - .com
This lettering is to help identify the character of a site.
For example is it a commercial (com) site? or does it represent a network of organisations (net)? Is it designed to be viewed by means of a mobile device such as a mobile phone (.mobi) or indeed, is it specific to a particular country such as .us (USA) .au (Australia) etc? Depending on the use of a site, some of these extensions are more popular than others
(see also What extension?) But whatever your choice, we are here to advise and help! |
